Stainless steel welding in Vista, CA

Stainless parts get held at receiving for heavy heat tint, a missing cert or a weld that doesn’t match the spec. We TIG weld stainless steel, including 316, finish it to your spec, including passivation, and ship it with the paperwork.

What we weld in stainless.

Built to your drawing, one part or a production run.

Flange-to-pipe welds

Flanges welded to pipe, reducers and elbows. Example: a 316 stainless flange-to-pipe weld.

Flanged spools

Short spools with 45° and 90° turns, such as 316 stainless 4-bolt flanged 45° and 90° spools.

Butt welds on pipe and tube

TIG butt welds on stainless pipe and tube, inspected visually and tested when the job calls for it.

Plate and tube assemblies

Stainless brackets, frames and assemblies built to your drawing, prototype through production.

Heat tint and passivation, in plain terms.

What heat tint is.
The straw-to-blue color beside a stainless weld is an oxide layer that formed while the metal was hot. The further it runs from straw toward blue, the thicker the oxide.
Why it matters.
Heavy tint lowers corrosion resistance at the weld. On a bracket that may not matter. On a part in corrosive service, it usually does.
What passivation does.
Passivation is a chemical treatment that removes free iron from the surface and helps the protective chromium oxide layer re-form. Heavy tint is normally removed first. Passivation alone doesn’t take it off.
What to put on the drawing.
Whether tint is acceptable, the passivation spec, and any testing you need. We quote to it, and we’ll ask if something’s missing.

    First part checked to print

Part one is welded in its fixture and checked against your drawing before the run starts.

  4. 04

    The run

Every part sets up in the same fixture, so the last part matches the first.

  5. 05

    Inspected, packed, documented

Visual weld inspection, finishing such as passivation when it’s specified, then packed and shipped with MTRs, weld inspection reports and test results.

Stainless welding questions.

Do you weld 316 stainless?

Yes. We TIG weld stainless steel, including 316. Documented work includes 316 stainless 4-bolt flanged 45° and 90° spools and a 316 stainless flange-to-pipe weld.

Do you work to AWS D1.6?

Yes. AWS D1.6 is the structural welding code for stainless steel. For stainless process piping we work to ASME B31.3, with procedures qualified to ASME Section IX. Other codes on request.

Can you passivate after welding?

Yes. Passivation is done in-house or through our finishing partners and delivered with the parts as one job. Put the spec on your drawing or in the notes.

Is heat tint acceptable?

That’s your spec’s call, and it depends on the part’s service. Tell us what the drawing allows and whether passivation is required, and we quote to it.

What paperwork comes with stainless parts?

Material certs (MTRs), weld inspection reports and test results when your job calls for them. Visual, bend and dye penetrant (PT) testing are done in-house. X-ray (RT) and ultrasonic (UT) go through an independent lab when required.

Do you weld duplex stainless?

Yes. See Inconel, titanium and duplex welding for how we handle it.
